An Overview and Methods of Hip Replacement Surgery

What happens during hip replacement surgery. The surgeon makes an incision along the hip and moves the muscles that cover the thigh bone to expose the hip joint. The assisting medical staff preps the necessary tools and artificial joints that will be inserted during the operation.

The surgeon will prep the hip area for the new joint by first removing any damaged cartilage or tissues in the area. A drain may also be inserted to move any fluid.

The damaged hip bone is removed with a saw, and a new, artificial socket is inserted. This piece is called the “acetabular component” or “cup.” Now that the socket has been taken care of, the surgeon turns their attention to the ball. The ball of the hip will be supported by an implant called the femoral stem, which is inserted into the femur (thighbone).
