An Overview and Treatment of Misophonia

Symptoms. Most people can’t stand the shrill screech of fingernails being dragged across a chalkboard, but does it cause you to get up and flee the room or scream out suddenly in anger? People suffering from misophonia can be struck with sudden and severe anxiety, intense anger, or even irresistible physical urges when hearing specific sounds. A person can suffer from mild or severe cases of misophonia. Some symptoms of mild selective sound sensitivity syndrome include anxiety, aggravation, discomfort, disgust, and the urge to flee. In more severe cases, one might suffer from overwhelming fear, panic, anger, hatred, intense emotional distress, the sensation of crawling skin, the urge to stop or even harm whatever or whoever is making the noise, or suicidal thoughts.
