Treatment. As of 2019, there is no cure for sickle cell anemia. The best way to treat sickle cell anemia is to avoid it. This means genetic testing of parents who may have the sickle cell trait. If a child is born with the disease, they should have medical interventions early before symptoms appear. Symptoms rarely appear before the child is four months old and most times not until they are a few years old. The parents should take advantage of facilities that can help them and their child cope with the disease. This includes ways to ease pain, avoid complications and to find prompt medical services if the child has a crisis.
