Causes. As with other autoimmune diseases, doctors don’t know why people get myasthenia gravis. There is a rare congenital type of the disease that’s caused bysmutations in the genes that control the way the nerves and muscles interact, and newborns whose mothers have myasthenia gravis sometimes show symptoms for a few months after birth. This is called neonatal myasthenia.
