Potential Complications. The biggest concern with squamous cell carcinoma is that while it is not a particularly aggressive form of cancer, it can and will continue to spread if it is left unaddressed for an extended period of time. Once the cancer has spread beyond the skin into the lymphatic system, it is a serious life threatening disease. While fatalities from squamous cell carcinoma are not particularly common, they can and do occur. Individuals who have squamous cell carcinoma on any of the mucous membrane parts of the skin and or have a weakened immune system are at a higher risk of the cancer aggressively spreading.
