Side Effects and Dangers. ALA is usually safe for most adults when taken as directed. It has been known to cause nausea, itching, and vomiting at much higher doses. There is no evidence that very large amounts of ALA give any added benefit. Some studies have found that extremely high doses of ALA may cause oxidation, disrupt the activity of enzymes, and even damage or place trauma upon bodily tissues. High doses of ALA can have a negative effect on the skin. Prolonged exposure to it has been known to make the skin tingle, burn, or sting. If using ALA, you should stay out of the sun or minimize your time outside. To date, the studies that look at the safety of ALA in children and pregnant women are sparse. People who fall into these categories should not take it unless advised by their physician.
