The Causes, Symptoms and Risk Factors of Chronic Cough

Symptoms. The most common symptoms include dripping or drainage in the back of the throat, persistent heartburn, wheezing (a whistling sound, heard when breathing in), shortness of breath or a runny, stuffy nose. Some of the rare and more concerning signs include a high, prolonged fever, blood in the sputum (a mixture of saliva, mucus and, sometimes, pus), coughing up abnormal amounts of sputum, chest pain (not caused by coughing), a sudden loss of appetite, unintentional weight loss and extreme fatigue.
