The Causes, Symptoms and Treatment of Folliculitis

Treatment. Mild cases of folliculitis do not require treatment and will go away on their own usually in about a week. This is true for most cases of folliculitis. To speed and encourage healing: keep the area clean, apply over-the-counter antibacterial creams, minimize shaving, avoid wearing tight clothes, and avoid scratching the area. Itching can be treated with certain creams purchased over-the-counter from a pharmacy. More severe cases with larger blisters or when boils develop may require a trip to the doctor. A doctor may write a prescription for antibacterial cream, but will only in the most severe cases prescribe an oral antibiotic.
