Causes. The causes of schizophrenia are not currently known. However, researchers believe that schizophrenia comes from a combination of genetic factors and environmental factors. Ongoing research has provided insight into schizophrenia that may eventually lead to an understanding of its causes. For example, those with schizophrenia have a different brain structure and central nervous system compared to those without schizophrenia.
