The Risks, Procedure and Recovery of Lasik Surgery

Procedure. The patient consults with the eye surgeon well before the surgery to make sure they are a good candidate for Lasik. The patient will have an eye exam and the doctor tells them what to do to prepare for the surgery. Among other things, the patient should stop wearing contact lenses since this can alter the natural shape of their cornea. The surgery itself lasts about 30 minutes while the patient reclines in a treatment chair. They’re given a sedative, and numbing eye drops are put into their eye. Then, the eye is held open by an instrument and a suction ring is put over it. With the eye secured, the surgeon cuts a tiny flap in the front of the eye. They peel the flap back then use a laser to precisely reshape the cornea. After this, the flap is put back in place without stitches.
