The Signs and Symptoms, Causes and Treatment of Liver Cirrhosis

Symptoms. The early stages of cirrhosis of the liver are asymptomatic for many people. Others may feel constantly tired and weak, and they may be nauseated. As the disease progresses, they lose their appetite and start to lose weight. They may notice they have tiny spots on their skin or spider veins. In the later stage of cirrhosis of the liver the person may have jaundice, which means their skin and the whites of their eyes turn yellow. At the same time the palms of their hands are blotchy and red. They have dark yellow or brown urine, and stool that is clay-colored, black or bloody. Their abdomen, legs and feet swell due to a loss of albumin, and they start to lose body hair. Their skin also starts to itch, and sometimes the itching is so intense that it can’t be relieved.

People with liver cirrhosis bleed and bruise easily and sometimes have personality changes. It can even affect a person’s reproductive health. Male testicles may atrophy, and the breasts may grow, a condition called gynecomastia. Women’s menstrual cycles may become irregular or stop altogether.
