The Symptoms and Causes of Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Infection

Causes. Cytomegalovirus is classified as a beta-herpes virus. It is a member of the same viral family associated with herpes simplex, mononucleosis, and chickenpox. CMV is known to remain mostly dormant in its infected hosts but is prone to repeated viral reactivations throughout an infected person’s life. It is during these activated periods that CMV can be transmitted from one person to another. In general, it is best to avoid contact with bodily fluids from other people. Proper, regular hygiene is the best way to avoid spreading this virus.
