Prevention. As of 2019, there is no sure way to prevent calciphylaxis, as doctors do not know what causes it. There are studies of patients who had the disorder but were treated with a combination of the surgery to remove the necrotic tissue and negative pressure wound therapy. In this treatment, the doctor or nurse places foam bandages over the wound then seals it with a film with an opening. One end of a tube attached to a vacuum pump and canister is placed through the hole, and the vacuum pump draws the infected fluid from the patient’s wound. This both pulls the edges of the wound toward each other and helps it heal. Some patients who had this treatment did not see the return of their calciphylaxis.
