Causes. Experts are still unsure of the causes. Many think it is an inherited condition because half of those with RLS have a close family member with the syndrome. Several chronic conditions, including Parkinson’s disease, iron deficiency, diabetes, kidney failure and drug or alcohol dependency, have RLS as one of their symptoms. In these cases, treating the main condition can stop RLS. It can also appear as a side effect of some medications like antihistamines, opioids, sedatives, cold medicines and antidepressants. RLS caused by medicines can be eased or eliminated by adjusting the dosage.
