After a diagnosis is confirmed, the doctor will go over treatment options with the patient, often providing a list of possible medications that can be taken to reduce symptoms and alleviate pain. Certain over-the-counter medications may be enough to treat patients with mild symptoms. However, stronger non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are commonly prescribed by doctors to those patients whose pain is long-lasting and strongly impacting their daily lives. Patients with severe pain may even be prescribed different narcotic medications or antidepressants. These types of medicine are typically reserved for patients whose symptoms are so extreme that they are being kept awake at night.
