Avoid punishment. Punishment can come in the form of yelling, criticizing, or even ridding the child of some privilege because of nighttime wetting. This can lead to poor self-image and lack of confidence for the child. Instead, parents should focus on encouraging the child in keeping up with the nighttime bathroom schedule. Parents can explain to the child that this happens to others as well and that someone in the family had the same problem as a child that they overcame. It is best to not share that the child has a nighttime problem with anyone outside the family so they do not feel ashamed.
