When the body is unable to metabolize lactic acid fast enough due to overproduction of it, this is called lactic acidosis. This can cause the blood acidity levels to increase or blood PH levels to decrease and become more acidic. Lactic Acidosis happens due to a build up of lactic acid from the lack of oxygen in the muscles. Without adequate amounts of oxygen in the muscles, they are unable to metabolize glycogen and glucose. This glucose and glycogen breakdown process is also known as aerobic metabolism.
Information. There are two different classifications of lactic acidosis. The first is Type A lactic acidosis which is associated with hypoperfusion of tissues resulting from sepsis, hypovolemia, and cardiac failure. Type B lactic acidosis is associated with the interference of cellular functioning and tissue hypoperfusion of localized regions. There is no cookie cutter approach to treating lactic acidosis because it can only be treated by treating the underlying cause of it. In some cases, lactic acidosis can be a serious medical emergency because sepsis, primary hyperventilation, acute bowel ischemia and intoxication, circulatory shock, acute abdomen ischemia and intoxication, and convulsions can result from it.
