Symptoms. The symptoms of bacterial pneumonia include a high fever, which would be over 102 degrees Fahrenheit in an adult. The fever is accompanied by chills, shortness of breath and a cough that brings up bloody sputum. The person breathes rapidly, but breathing is painful. They also suffer from fatigue, pain in the abdomen, loss of appetite and weight loss. In rare cases, their lips and nails turn blue.
