Symptoms and Signs. A person who has hip bursitis feels tenderness over the bony part of the upper part of their thigh. They also feel pain running across their hip or down the outer part of their thigh. They might also notice that the area is swollen and warm. If they try to bend or extend their hip while walking, playing sports or participating in strenuous exercise, they will feel aches, pains or a burning sensation at the top of their thigh. Their doctor can confirm their condition by taking X-rays and other types of scans.
